SOLAR POWER SYDNEY

Learn the basics

Quality Solar Sydney is available to help you make an informed decision about the right solar system to suit your needs – whether it be for residential or commercial purposes.

Solar photovoltaics (PV) vs. Solar Hot Water

Solar PV technology involves the capture and conversion of light energy into usable electricity. In contrast, solar hot water uses solar energy to heat water only.

Quality Solar Sydney’s does not currently offer solar hot water services however, we can likely introduce you to a certified installer in your local area so let us know if you would like to be connected to one.

Commercial Solar PV vs. Residential Solar PV

Quality Solar Sydney has a commercial team that manages tenders for a wide array of large-scale solar projects & multi-installation roll-outs.

We also have a dedicated team of residential solar PV system installers, who assist our customers with smaller systems (usually 1.5 – 10 kilowatts). You can also check get an instant quote by clicking through to our free Solar Quote Comparison Tool .

Our Solar Quote Comparisons give you a free and accurate snapshot of the prices in your area, comparing up to 5 different suppliers who can install residential-scale systems.

Grid-connected vs Off-grid solar PV systems

Most new solar system installations in Sydney are grid-connected systems. These are systems that connect residential homes to the power grid. These solar systems don’t usually require batteries.

In contrast, ‘stand-alone’ or off-grid systems are for dwellings that are not linked the electricity grid. Most of the information on our website is related to grid-connected systems however, if you have an off-grid enquiry, please get in touch with us to discuss your options here.

In recent years that has been a significant interest in ‘hybrid’ systems that use grid-connected solar + batteries. These systems allow a greater degree of energy independence while still having the electricity grid as a source of back-up energy.

How does residential solar power save you money?

For the purposes of a grid-connected residential customer who is likely to be concerned first and foremost with return on investment (ROI) through electricity bill savings, the most important things to keep in mind are system yield (output over its lifetime) and the incentives that are on offer to make going solar more accessible.

Understanding solar system performance and yield

The greater the power a solar system generates, the more savings you can potentially gain on your electricity bills. The total power output of a solar system is affected by several different factors so it’s important to get qualified advice and properly understand the relationship between performance and yield.

Solar system prices

In recent years the cost of solar has decreased significantly. This is due to a number of factors with a reason being that the cost of the technology has reduced as demand has increased from households and companies around the world.

Solar system sizing

The size of your solar system should be related to your need. Get in touch with one of our solar experts today who will assist you in deciding the right size system for your household.

How much solar power will your system export to the grid?

This really depends on whether you have access to a reasonable solar feed-in tariff and also whether you can avoid using much electricity during the day. If your feed-in tariff rate is low (generally below 6c/kWh) then we usually recommend you focus on consuming as much as your own solar power first before selling it back to the grid.

Orientation and sunlight

In most parts of Australia, panel arrays should be installed facing north to receive optimal sunlight.

It’s also important to place solar panels in a way that will avoid partial shading, for instance, with sunlight being blocked by other buildings or trees through part of the day.

System components: Solar panels and inverters

There are three main types of solar panel technology that are commonly used including:

Monocrystalline, Polycrystalline and thin film amorphous. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages. Contact us today to find out which technology is most appropriate for your needs.

It’s important to ensure that your inverters system capacity is closely aligned with the total energy output of your panels. Also, please note that ‘peak efficiency’ is not always the critical determinant of selecting the right inverter to suit your existing system.

Battery energy storage

Home battery energy storage is fast becoming the next major trend in residential solar.

By installing a solar battery home owners are able to ensure they can utilise their captured energy more efficiently instead of just having it sold back to the grid at a nominal rate. The cost of installing a solar battery has reduces significantly in recent years with a number of makers offering different sized units with varying capacity and capability.
